Michel Elias Murr Family
The Michel Elias Murr family is involved in business and politics. Group Murr, which they own, is involved in media, construction and maintenance, and several real estate development projects in Lebanon. The family has also owned a private aviation fleet since 1967. Its consolidated turnover exceeds 2 billion US dollars.
The family is a significant political player. Michel Elias Murr Sr. first served in the Lebanese Parliament from 1968 to 1972, and has been in Parliament since 1991. He also held ministerial positions from 1979 to 1982, and from 1990 to 2000 (when he was also Deputy Prime Minister). His son Elias Murr is the President of the Board of the Interpol Foundation for a Safer World. He served as Minister of Interior (2000-2004), Minister of Defense (2005-2011), and Deputy Prime Minister (2005-2008; 2009-2011). Elias Murr was married to Carine Lahoud, daughter of former President of the Republic Emile Lahoud. Elias Murr's sister, Myrna, is the President of the Bteghrine Municipality and President of the Metn Federation of Municipalities. She is the mother of former MP Nayla Tueni from her first marriage to former MP Gebran Tueni. Myrna Murr later married Mr. Pierre Aboucharaf, son of former MP Louis Aboucharaf. Michel Elias Murr is the brother of Gabriel Murr, whose family owns MTV and several other media outlets. But the two sides of the family do not have joint business interests. Michel Elias Murr is also the uncle of Arz El Murr, whose family owns El-Nashra website and other business interests. But here again, there are no joint interests between the two sides of the family.
Group Murr has also announced the launch of a new French-language daily newspaper in Lebanon, L'Appel (which was supposed to be launched in 2017).
